London The Parlour
WOW!house
Martin Kemp Design, will unveil The Parlour at this year's WOW!house, an immersive interior exploring intrigue, atmosphere and gradual discovery.
Conceived as a response to the immediacy and visual saturation of contemporary life, the room rejects the idea of a single focal point. Instead, it unfolds as a sequence of layered moments, inviting visitors to move through the space and experience it slowly. A circular architectural plan deliberately resists direct sightlines, creating an environment where elements reveal themselves incrementally rather than all at once.
With a generous ceiling height of 3050mm, dramatic drapery and carefully orchestrated lighting shape the spatial experience. Fabric is used not only as decoration but as architecture, framing views, filtering light and creating moments of concealment and disclosure throughout the room. At the centre sits a circular seating arrangement composed of two curved sofas and a central table, surrounded by cascading layers of textile that establish an intimate conversational core. Beyond this nucleus, curated vignettes of furniture, lighting and objects emerge gradually, while artworks remain partially obscured behind fabric panels, reinforcing the sense of intrigue that defines the scheme.
Materiality plays a key role in building depth and atmosphere. Tonal layering and tactile contrasts, matte against sheen, density against transparency, create a rich yet restrained palette. Fabrics by Dedar introduce movement and softness, while paint finishes by Benjamin Moore anchor the space with subtle tonal variation. Carpets by Colbourns enhance the room’s acoustics and enveloping quality, while vintage pendant light fixtures provide indirect illumination that allows shadow to exist as intentionally as light.
